Dr. Sara Hillman will be an Assistant Professor of ESL in the Liberal Arts Program at Texas A&M at Qatar starting in the Fall of 2015. She completed her Ph.D. in Second Language Studies (SLS) at Michigan State University (MSU) with a research focus on Arabic language learning. She also holds a MA degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from MSU and a BA degree in International Relations with a focus on Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the American University in Washington D.C. Sara has previously lived and studied in Egypt, Syria, and East Jerusalem, and has taught courses in ESL, Arabic, language teaching methods, and discourse theory. Additionally, she has previously worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian and African Languages at MSU, as the Bilingual Assistant for Middlebury College’s summer Arabic Language School, and as Academic Coordinator of the Arabic Flagship Program at MSU.
Her research and teaching interests include: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language (TESOL); Arabic second/foreign/heritage language acquisition; language and identity; discourse analysis; language socialization, language play in the second language classroom; language teaching methods; and language for specific purposes
